Tufting: Zen of the Dark Season or a Release for Aggression?

ateljeepiccolo

The darkness of January feels like an eternal marathon in the fog—it just goes on and on. When you wake up in the morning, it’s dark. When you sit at your desk in the afternoon, it’s still dark. And when you’re buttering your evening sandwich, it’s under the glow of a headlamp because it’s pitch black. But you know what? This is precisely the time of year when we can let our inner creativity rise to the surface and guide us toward the light—or at least to the tufting frame.

During the darkest time of the year, as the view outside the window turns into a jet-black cityscape and the gloom seeps into your mind, many seek solace in yoga, meditation, or candlelit evenings. I, on the other hand, head to my studio, grab my tufting gun, and let its rat-a-tat taa echo into the darkness. Stress relief? Maybe. But truthfully, this is the perfect way to blow off steam—and completely guilt-free!

The secret to tufting lies in how each motion feels like a small victory: the yarn sinking into the soft fabric, forming something beautiful and unique. But honestly, the most therapeutic moment is when the machine hums in your hand, and you let your creativity—and perhaps some accumulated frustrations—burst onto the fabric. Oh, the relief—it’s divine!

As I gaze at the pitch-black city through my studio window, the vibrant colors of the yarn bring their light into the darkness. The sharp textures and soft, woolly threads feel like a warm blanket for the soul. And while the result may not always be a masterpiece, the process itself keeps my mind bright during the long, dark months.

So, if you’re wondering how to survive the gloomiest time of the year, I wholeheartedly recommend getting yourself a tufting gun—and maybe a bit more yarn. 😉

The Hämeenlinna Arts Event and My "Trace of Light" Exhibition

If the joy of tufting or the gloom of January hasn’t been enough to inspire you, there’s something on the horizon that’s sure to brighten your spirits. On Friday, January 31, 2025, the Hämeenlinna Arts Night invites you to celebrate creativity!

I’m thrilled to participate in the event with my exhibition, "Trace of Light," which will be on display at the Kellarigalleria in Galleria RaamiDaamit. This collection was born out of the inspiration of the darkest months and reflects the movement, reflections, and moods left behind by light. The works capture the fleeting nature of light—how it refracts, disappears, and leaves its mark.

Where and When?📍 Galleria RaamiDaamitBirger Jaarlin katu 25, 13100 Hämeenlinna⏰ Exhibition open on Friday, January 31, 2025

Come spend an evening surrounded by art and light—and who knows, you might even find your inspiration to conquer the darkness of January. And if not, perhaps you’ll discover an alternative cure for your angst at one of my tufting courses! 😉
